The canvas dated to 1812 and still contained in its original frame is a typical example of a state portrait, in which every element and symbol inserted by the painter helps to define and make the official role of the person portrayed recognizable.
Also known in two other replicas preserved in France (Versailles and maison Chaumet, Paris), the painting was bought by the Sanvitale family from Count Gerolamo Nasalli, administrator of Maria Luigia's heirs.
