The impressively proportioned formal portrait of the Soviet Union Marshal and holder of multiple orders Semyon Budyonny is based on the traditions of the representational portrait, showing not only the likeness of the subject but also emphasizing his high rank and authority. This is largely achieved by showing a full-length figure, in ceremonial outfit, with every detail rendered with incredible accuracy: highly polished boots, a sparkling sabre, gleaming decorations and medals. The figure is half-turned, viewed almost from the side, his face is in three quarter view. The low horizon chosen by the artist visually elevates the marshal’s figure – as if he is watching us from an invisible pedestal. Budyonny is portrayed against a grand staircase, with steps covered with a strip of red carpet - an essential attribute of all ceremonial interiors.
