Janet Russell (1866–1954) was the youngest of George and Euphemia Russell's eight children. She inherited Golf Hill after her only brother Philip arranged for her to take over the property before his death in 1898. With her husband, Commander John Biddlecombe (1869–1929), whom she married in 1900, Janet successfully managed the property for many years with a celebrated Hereford stud, before accepting its partial subdivision for soldier settlement after World War II.

This portrait was painted during a visit by Mrs Biddlecombe to her relatives in Scotland. It was presented to the Library by her great-niece in 1980.
