Portrait of Nell Mercer

Nell Mercer, a businesswoman from Virginia, was a member of the Norfolk branch of the National Woman’s Party. She was one of two African-American women who participated in the 1919 watchfire demonstrations outside the White House. She was arrested during the protest and spent five days in jail.
