Ca’ Granda – Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico
Milan, Italy

Giovanni Angelo Medici di Marignano (1499-1565), born in Milan, became pontiff in 1559, donated several possessions to the Ospedale Maggiore, including the properties of the abbeys of Ganna and Morimondo. The hospital accounts show that the portrait was paid to the painter Ottavio Bizzozzero in 1680, replacing a work by Camillo Serbelloni, of a similar subject, now no longer present.
