Ca’ Granda – Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico
Milan, Italy

Vittorio Mariani (1896-1930), is not a direct benefactor of the Maggiore Ospedale. Doctor: son of Giovanbattista, deputy head of Odontaiatria at the Fatebenesorelle Hospital, he graduated in Pavia, and specialized in Geneva at the famous stomatologist Ludovico Cailloux. At his death, not yet forty years old, his mother Giulia Balzaretti, sister of the engineer Vittorio, in her turn a benefactor of the Hospital, devotes 50,000 to Ca 'Granda in memory of his son. The portrait is commissioned to Leonardo Dudreville, who portrays him with a melancholy expression, in a composition in which the painter appears in harmony with the nineteenth-century Lombard portrait tradition.
