The furnaces of Andrew Carnegie’s Edgar Thomson Works blazing away at night made a dramatic postcard image. Generations of Pittsburghers grew up with the sight of the steel mills illuminating the night sky. But in this case, the image was created through artistic license: the real photograph was taken in daylight and transformed into a night scene when it was colorized.
