Postcard from Sergeant Thomas Jacques

Another example of correspondence to loved ones back at home is this silk postcard, sent by Sergeant Thomas Jacques to his mother, Alice.

Sergeant Jacques was an electric light installation attendant from Wath-on-Dearne, the son of George and Alice, brother of Kathleen, Alice, Hilda and John. He joined the York and Lancaster Regiment and was sent to Flanders.

On 20th May 1915, he sent this silk postcard to his mother, asking her for a French-English dictionary, and mentioning going into the trenches.

The card has a simple greeting in bold black ink; the request for the dictionary and his movement to the front line is written in small penciled letters, almost as if he wanted to avoid the censor.

Sergeant Jacques died at Ypres on 10th July 1915.
