Built in the early 17th century, Bolsover Castle lies on the ruins of the 12th-century medieval castle. The original castle was built by the Peverel family in the 12th century and became Crown property in 1155. The present castle was built between 1612 and 1617 by Sir Charles Cavendish, son of Bess of Hardwick, the wealthiest woman in England after Queen Elizabeth I.
Classed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, and Grade I listed, the castle is in the care of English Heritage. In 2017 the site was voted the most haunted site by English Heritage staff.
