Awara (1951) marks the first collaboration between K.A. Abbas and actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor. Starring real-life father-son duo Prithviraj Kapoor and Raj Kapoor, the film became a huge success not just in India but also in the Soviet Union, which marked the beginning of Raj Kapoor’s immense popularity there. Awara was nominated for the Palme D’Or at the 1953 Cannes Film Festival and remains one of the classics of Hindi cinema.
