"This monochrome poster with the symbolism and sinuous lines of Modernisme was designed by Miquel Utrillo ( Barcelona, 1862 - Sitges, 1934) to announce the opening night of the opera La Fada (The Fairy), a poem by Jaume Masso i Torrents inspired by a Pyrenean legend and set to music by Enric Morera.
La Fada was performed with the purpose to help establish Catalan opera. Modernistes greatly appreciated the genre because they considered it to be a display of Total Art. For this project, Rusiñol was aided by his friends because, as well as Massó and Morera, the creators of the work, Utrillo designed the poster and, together with Antoni Mirabent i Soler, he took care of the scenography; Alexandre de Riquer drew the programme, Massó, with Pompeu Fabra’s help, taught the Italian singers how to pronounce the Catalan language and Lluís Labarta designed the costumes.
The first night was held in Casino Prado, on 14 February 1897, and it was one of the main acts of the IV Moderniste Festival. It was attended by Catalan intellectuals and was closely covered by the press at that time."
