Poster produced for the film 'Shree 420' (trans. Mr. 420) starring the iconic duo, Raj Kapoor and Nargis, in the lead. Directed and produced by Raj Kapoor himself, the film released on 6th September 1955. The number 420 refers to Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code, which prescribes the punishment for the offence of cheating; hence, 'Mr. 420' is a symbolic title for a cheat. 'Shree 420' was the highest grossing film of 1955, and the song "Mera Joota Hai Japani", became an extremely popular and a patriotic symbol of the newly independent India. Alonside an image of Raj Kapoor from the song at the centre in the foreground, the poster also features Nargis on the left in the background, and on the right, a representation of one of the most famous stills from the film — that of Raj Kapoor & Nargis under an umbrella — as picturised in another popular song from the film, "Pyaar Hua Ikraar Hua Hain".
