The haegeum has a rodlike neck, a hollow wooden sound box, and two silk strings, and is held vertically on the performer’s knee. The left hand creates tension on the strings and the right hand controls the bowing. The haegeum is made with eight materials: gold, rock, thread, bamboo, gourd, soil, leather, and wood. It is used in court orchestras as well as solo and ensemble music.
