Powder case with lid

A spherical powder case with a lid and a round knob in the middle. The base has a very pronounced cavity on the inside. The green decoration is applied on white glaze and is concentrated on the body of the powder compact and on the edges of the lid, as well as a detail on the top of the knob. It consists of a bouquet of poppies.

The stamp is printed in ochre and consists of a double circle. In the centre is: “CARTUJA” on an anchor. On the ring is: “PICKMAN S.A./SEVILLA”.

The prototype of this design was drawn by Jorge Pope in May 1884 and was applied to both household items and tableware. Other pieces are known that are exactly the same but printed in different colours but they are always in a single colour.

Pieces, such as this one, which were for personal hygiene, were part of what was called "the home range", which also included others for tableware. All were printed in stoneware rather than in opaque china, but they were printed and decorated with the same motifs as the crockery. This can be seen in the factory's price catalogues where for each design and print we can see the price of the crockery depending on the raw material used to produce it; for stoneware the price was detailed for the whole of the home range.
