This design shows a goblet in which the section between the lower stem and the cup is adorned with a variety of figures, comprising bacchants, maenads, and a panther. It served as the preliminary design for an engraving featured in a collection entitled Vorbilder für Fabrikanten und Handwerker (‘Designs for Manufacturers and Craftsmen’) (see inv. 34.26-1991 and SM 43a.24 for the frieze in its completed state). A number of the proposed ‘silver or gold’ goblets were indeed produced after this design by a variety of gold and silversmiths, including Johann Georg Hossauer. One of the silver goblets created by Hossauer is today kept at the Berlin Kunstgewerbemuseum (inv. no. 1980, 166).
