James Monroe toured the northern part of the United States for 15 weeks in 1817, traveling some 2,000 miles and meeting more people than any previous president. A Boston newspaper coined the slogan for Monroe's presidency when it described his visit to that city as having created an "Era of Good Feeling." Samuel Putnam Waldo's account of Monroe's northern tour was also well received, inspiring the author to release a second edition that added coverage of the president's travels through the Chesapeake Bay region in 1818. Monroe toured the southern states in 1819, once again logging nearly 2,000 miles over a period of 16 weeks.
