The decision to invite Gorton was a combination of the Club Patron, Mr W.J. Aston, who was the Speaker in the Federal House of Representative and Gorton's commitment to the Life Saving movement, which was to see him become a vice-patron of the Australian Surf Life Saving Association on the day of the opening of the extensions.
Mr Gorton officially opened $25,000 additions to the club and unveiled a plaque dedicating the building to the memory of all members who served in war.
