Image taken from the pedestal of the statue of Juan Sebastián Elcano by Ricardo Bellver (Madrid 1845–1924) in Getaria. On it is the inscription "Primus circumdedisti me", a famous Latin phrase that does not come from Roman times. It translates as: "You were first to circumnavigate me."
In 1522, Juan Sebastián Elcano, the first person to circumnavigate the world, was compensated by Charles V for his achievement with an annuity of 500 gold ducats per year. He was also given a coat of arms, whose crest features a globe with the inscription "Primus circumdedisti me."
