The Virgin of El Rocío, also known as “White Dove” or “Queen of the Marshes,” is a Marian dedication venerated at the Sanctuary of El Rocío in Almonte (Huelva). “El Rocío,” as the pilgrimage is traditionally known, has become a phenomenon that lies somewhere between religion and folklore, and is of great social importance. It mobilizes more than a million people over the days it is celebrated in May or June (depending on the date of the Pentecost festival), and hundreds of thousands more travel to the shrine to worship the Virgin throughout the year.
