Isaac Diaz’s installation speaks to reinterpretation as a way of navigating one’s life path—an expression of building a space or one's self when all one is given are fragments and rubble. The history of the Americas has left its current people disconnected. Among the legacies of erasure and genocide is the loss of language, culture, and traditions. In the effacement, things evolve and spiral out to make something new. Reimagining Latin American and pre-Columbian imagery and symbols, Diaz refers to the space he has created as one “made from what my own path has thus far taught me.” This work reflects a practice fueled by an ongoing search for “the meaning of the spiral, the power of space building, and the importance of looking to the past to look towards the future.”
