A Dinka herder rubs powdered ash over his body to protect and beautify his skin. The cattle dung that fuels the camp fire at night is reduced to ash by morning and then used as a body makeup, sunblock and mosquito repellant. The Dinka, often 7ft tall and covered with ash, were called “The Ghostly Giants” by early explorers travelling down the Nile.
