In addition to his decorated military career during the civil war, José Laureano Sanz was also appointed to Governor and Captain General of Puerto Rico in 1868. He would be responsible for supressing insurgencies during the Grito de Lares–a local uprising against Spanish occupation on the island—establishing a civilian government, building and improving the island's infrastructure and making revisions to better work conditions for slaves. Antonio María Esquivel was a prolific painter known for his portraits while serving as Chamber Painter to the Queen in 1843.
