Quarantine Island

The individuals pictured here were immigrants who were removed from a ship and held on one of the quarantine islands due to reports of a smallpox outbreak on the ship during the Atlantic crossing. Caught in a limbo, having left their homes but not yet welcomed into their destination country, these immigrants wait to be released so that they may continue their journey into America.
