Between 6 February and 1 July 2015, The Hepworth Wakefield presented UK’s first major exhibition by Lynda Benglis, one of America’s most influential artists. Surveying her five-decade long career, the exhibition brought together over 60 works that present her extraordinary innovation with materials. The exhibition also explored the subtle influences of Benglis’ homes and studios in New York, New Mexico, Ahmedabad in India and Kastelorizo in Greece, have had on her practice. These include the early latex, wax and cast works created in New York; the importance of classical Greek sculpture and notions of value and beauty in her moulded ‘torsos’; a focus on materials such as paper and fabric in works made in India; and her ceramic sculptures in which Benglis draws on the colours and materiality of the New Mexico landscape.
