Theatre performance Quartett by Heiner Müller, after Les liaisons dangereuses. Programmed in Holland Festival 2008.
The Dutch actor Jeroen Willems – winner of the Louis d’Or and the European Award for Outstanding Talent – and the German film and stage actress Barbara Sukowa – who starred in many of Fassbinder’s films – perform Heiner Müller’s razorsharp adaptation of Choderlos de Laclos’ epistolary novel Les liaisons dangereuses (1782) behind, on and around a twenty-four metre long table. Count Valmont and the Marquise de Merteuil throw themselves into a perverse role-play of lust and power. Swiss director Barbara Frey turns this brilliant play-within-a-play into a game of love, oscillating between destruction and devotion, between cold reason and animal cruelty, with two outstanding actors who change both sex and roles.
