Traditional "Queenslander"style wooden houses, elevated off the ground on "stumps", with an iron roof and a verandah (sometimes made of lacy cast iron) , suit the hot sub-tropical summers in Brisbane. This style of architecture originated with the Indian "bungalow" and spread during colonial times throughout the tropical regions of the Asia-Pacific. Sometimes built in underneath with battens, and with verandahs enclosed to provide more indoor space, renovated Queenslander homes in Brisbane today are highly prized.
