Rainbow Cup with head and lyre Obverse

150-50 B.C.

Landesmuseum Württemberg

Landesmuseum Württemberg
Stuttgart, Germany

The most important templates for Celtic coinage in the area that later became Baden-Württemberg were the gold coins of King Philip II of Macedon and his son, Alexander the Great. However, the imitations change the style of the templates: ornamental elements, such as swirls or curls, become more and more emphasised and the depiction becomes increasingly abstract. This development is documented by the beautiful rainbow cup found near Nagold. The concave obverse shows a curly head; the convex reverse two lyres and two palmettes.
