RAMA’S ARCHERY TRAINING: In the Bala-kanda of Valmiki Ramayan, Rama vanquishes Tataka who inhabited the forests of Malada ad Karusa. Elated by the victory, Indra instructed Vishwamitra to impart upon Rama, the knowledge of missiles. Vishwamitra not only taught and delivered to Rama and Lakshmana various missiles but also the power to recall such weapons.

This print from the Ravi Varma Press derived from a painting by Raja Ravi Varma depicts Rama as a young student holding the bow and arrow, concentrating his vision at a target. Lakshmana stands behind with his bow in hand. Vishwamitra is obscured behind Rama with only his aged and experienced hands visible - demonstrating the stance of holding the arrow and bow.
