HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The building was constructed as Viceroy’s residence to which the first occupant was Lord Irwin. The directives given to Sir Edwin Lutyens for the construction of the palatial Viceroy House by the then viceroy Lord Hardinge was that the House should be grand and have an Indian touch.
