Lessi was an academically trained artist whose genre scenes were carefully worked in a very meticulous, highly finished style. "Reading the Newspaper," is similar to other paintings in Lessi's work that recall the 17th-century Dutch genre paintings of Frans Hals. The artist was popular among late 19th-century collectors.
