Although Chet Atkins' role as a record producer (he was instrumental in creating the "Nashville sound" of the 50s and 60s) may have been the most significant element of his career, his excellence as a guitar player brought him success as a session player and a solo musician with his own LPs. Atkins made his Grand Ole Opry debut in 1946 and started recording that same year, going on to perform and record in country, pop, and jazz styles through the rest of his career. The 1962 album "Down Home" represented a return to Atkins' country roots, following some easy-listening releases. It garnered enthusiastic reactions from his fans and reached the Top 40 in sales.
