Recuay woman

Just as today, in the communities of ancient Peru the consumption of food and drink played an important part in festivities and ceremonies. Women also played an important role in these events, since they prepared the corn beer known in Quechua as “chicha”, which was used in ritual libations.

This sculptural vessel features the depiction of a woman wearing fine clothing and holding in both hands a ceremonial cup, as an offering to a leader or deity.
