Released Suffragette Prisoners

Freed Suffragette prisoners running from the gates of Holloway. Most Suffragettes served their prison sentence in Holloway, a women's prison from 1902. On release days Suffragettes would be met by a reception committee and transported back to central London for the presentation of prison and hunger-strike medals. This photograph probably dates from 1911 and shows Suffragettes being released after serving terms of imprisonment for window-smashing. Many would have been on hunger strike whilst in Holloway.
The Suffragette on the far right has been identified as Thirza (or Thurza) Cove, also known as Charlie Rove and later Thirza Stokes. (Identified by her granddaughter).
