Over 140,000 Polish Jews who had been evacuated to the Soviet Union in 1939, were repatriated to Poland in 1945-46. The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (“the Joint”) in cooperation with the Central Jewish Committee of Poland, met the returnees at the border and supplied them with clothing, emergency medical aid, and food.
