This folding fan made in Republican China’s Guangzhou area for export purpose is a delight to watch with its exquisite painting and ingenious craftsmanship. Its two guards are embellished with carved openwork and gold-tracing design, while its ribs ornamented with wire-sawn geometric and foliage motifs, and also floral patterns in gold. Shell-inlayed sticks in the shape of an upside-down triangle merge at the pivot, forming a pointed end at the head of the fan. Its panel with gold-powder-decorated edges features a pastel painting of western figures on one side while gold-tracing floral patterns on the other.
