This revolver was General O. O. Howard's personal sidearm. A Civil War veteran, Howard became the first head of the Freedman's Bureau, a federal agency created to assist emancipated slaves in meeting basic needs and finding employment. In the 1870s, he was stationed at Vancouver as the department commander and led several engagements against Native Americans, including the Nez Perce War.
