The Indian rhinoceros “Jungfer Clara” came to Versailles and Paris in 1749. Oudry studied her at the fair at St. Germain. With his life-size portrayal the artist has set a memorial for this rhinoceros. The natural scientist Georges-Louis Leclerc,Comte de Buffon, had an engraving made after the portrait. Through his sumptuous Histoire naturelle the Clara portrait was widespread.
