The introduction of rice in Madagascar, which started in the tenth century, coincided with the arrival of populations originating from Southeast Asia. Rice fields now belong to the landscape of this country, where more than half the population is rural (67%). Cultivation techniques are traditional, such as the stamping of the rice fields with a herd of cattle to loosen the soil before transplanting.
