This letter is effectively Royce Hart’s first contract with the Richmond Football Club. On being offered a place in the team, Hart’s mother stated that he would need new clothes for his new job in Melbourne. At the time players continued to work as football was not yet a full-time occupation.
The 24 June 1965 letter from the club to Hart stipulates that, in addition to a minimum weekly payment and match fees, the club would reimburse Hart for costs associated with his accountancy studies. They would also provide a suit, six shirts and a pair of shoes.
