A landscape with a tumbling river and rugged boulders. Seghers painted this imaginary landscape with fanciful brushstrokes, creating a grand and mysterious landscape on this small panel. The effect is reinforced by the passers-by, who appear very small and insignificant in the overwhelming presence of nature.
We know of only eleven paintings of mountainous fantasy landscapes and topographical cityscapes by Seghers. But there will have been more than that – Rembrandt alone had eight in his possession.
