Robben Island, off the coast of Cape Town served as a prison from the 17th to the 20th centrury and is home to the iconic prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years sentence. Declared a World Heritage Site in 1999, the island now stands as a museum which is testement to the struggle against apartheid and the sacrifices made for freedom in South Africa.
