Robben Island served as as prison from the 17th -the 20th centruy and is home to the iconic prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27. Declared a World Heritage Site in 1999, the island now stands as a museum which exists as a testement to the struggle against apartheid and the sacrifices made for freedom in South Africa.
