The commemorative medal consists of a stamped brass bar pin and a round die-stamped metal pendant. The bar pin is shaped like an eagle with outstretched wings with a chest shield, grasping crossed cannon in its claws. A clasp pin is soldered to the back of the bar pin. The silver colored pendant is suspended from the bar pin by a metal ring. The obverse of the pendant has a relief image of the Robert E. Lee Equestrian Monument in the center. "IN MEMORY OF ROBERT E. LEE THIS" is inscribed around the left edge of the pendant. "STATUE WAS UNVEILED MAY 29, 1890" is inscribed around the right edge of the pendant. The reverse of the pendant has the Virginia State Seal inside a shield in the center with the motto, "SIC SEMPER TYRANIS," inscribed below it.
