The souvenir is a wood slat from the crate over the Robert E. Lee equestrian statue dedicated on May 29, 1890, in Richmond, Virginia at what is now the intersection of Monument Avenue and Allen Street. The rectangular piece of wood has been stamped with an image of the statue in black on one side. The other side is printed in black with the following, "I certify that this is / a piece of the wood / case in which the / statue of Gen'l R. E. / Lee was shipped. / W. P. Smith [signature] / COMMANDER / R. E. CAMP, C. V."
