The Ballarat Avenue of Honour began planting in 1917. The avenue was a suggestion to honour the service of officers from the Ballarat area serving in World War I by Mrs W. D. Thompson, a director of clothing firm E. Lucas & Co.
500 women employed by E. Lucas & Co, known as the ‘Lucas girls’, raised £2,000 to plant a tree for each person enlisted, and the planting was completed in June 1919.
It is the longest example of this form of memorial with 3800 trees over a length of 22 kilometres of roadway.
The Roll of Honour memorial lists each tree by number and the name of the person it is dedicated to.
