I thought a lot about how everything that they had came from Old Nick, the
pieces needed to have an anonymous quality and the contrast of the colour
and playfulness and whimsy that belied the horror of the situation.
I imagined that he would have purchased them somewhere cheap and
anonymous like the clothing section of a dollar store or variety store,
somewhere that didn't even really sell clothing, somewhere that wouldn't
have noticed a man buying clothing for a woman and a child, or at least
wouldn't have cared. I did alot of research for the project, books written by
survivors of abductions and kidnappings and one of the themes that came
up was the sense that the kidnapper somehow had the sense that there was
aa real relationship between himself and the woman that he had kidnapped,
an odd sort of domesticity and a sense of care that they had taken in
looking after their captives. I imagined that he would have chosen things
that he thought had a pretty and feminine quality, although to us they were
horrible and sad’.
