Rope beds create support by criss-crossing under hay and straw mattresses, and need to be pulled taught nightly for a comfortable resting place, keeping the mattress from sagging to the floor. As straw mattresses also tended to attract bugs, Martin, the hired man, would certainly understand the old adage, "Sleep tight, and don't let the bed bugs bite"
