The Teatro Real's initial design and construction was the work of architect Antonio López Aguado. Inaugurated in 1850, a collapse in 1925 led to its closure for 41 years. In 1966, it reopened to the public as an auditorium and home to the Royal Conservatory of Music and School of Dramatic Arts. However, it wasn't until 1977 that it reopened, refurbished, as an opera house, becoming an international landmark.
