Ruby Lustre Dish with Dragon and Owls (front)

United Kingdom

Ruby lustre wide rimmed dish decorated with a dragon in the centre on a white ground. The Rim contains a repeat pattern of owls and leaves.

Ruby lustre is a special glaze made using copper oxide. This is painted onto a fired ceramic which then goes into the kiln for a second firing. The kiln is starved of oxygen, forcing the oxygen in the copper oxide to be released into the atmosphere and leaving a thin film of copper on the surface which reflects light as a beautiful iridescent sheen.
