THE EXPLORING BEGINS
Walther and Wilhelmina von Hallwyl and lady's companion Ida Uhse start exploring Cairo as soon as they arrive. Miss Uhse describes her first impressions:
“Cairo, 19th of Nov. Having unpacked, we went out straight after breakfast. In high spirits we wandered the streets where you can see Negros, Mulattos, Egyptians and Nubians, who look very good in their outfits. The carriages are driven by coloured drivers, mostly Negroes and Mulattos. The finest carriages have drivers and servants dressed in red fezzes as well as two runners in white costumes embroidered with gold. The latter run in front of the carriage while crying loudly in order to make room.”
